VESTIGES

We cannot discern the passing of time by itself, but by the vestiges of what once was, and in this sense, architecture can become a vessel of time. We can envision time as a layer that's present in the spaces that we live in, only revealed to us, either in the form of tradition and its paraphernalia or by the physical marks present in the architecture. It is only through this layer that we can identify pieces of ourselves within the spaces we inhabit. It’s through this layer that we can encounter the meaning of home within architecture.

For our project we came up with the idea of analyzing the spaces we inhabit through an archaeological and anthropological lens in order to understand the history embedded in them. For the execution, we thought of a house that’s been passed on by a couple of generations and it’s through honoring the small details, the defects, the traditions and the vestiges of time present in the architecture that we try to depict this history embedded in the home and the meaning it has to the people that live in it.

We finally decided on the camera and from there we just started constructing the scene but our main goal was to work around our concept, our main concern was to frame the action and the details that would portray our idea.

Then we started modeling the space and adapting furniture, this was pretty much a trial and error process

We created a mood board to visualize materials, light, spaces, etc.

We started by gathering some pictures from the web and trying out some quick concepts on Midjourney.

The concept started because one of us recently moved into a new house and it needed some renovations done, so in the process of renovating it, we could see that there where many layers of paint in the walls, some of the layers older than others. The same went with the marks present on doors and even the light switches where not the same kind, this just made us think of how many other families have lived there before us and which one was responsible for what.
